ChatGPT: Turning Memory Off Stops Memory Use, Not Every Stored Source

OpenAI says in its current Memory FAQ that memory can use context from chats, files, and connected apps to personalize the experience. It also says users can disable memory at any time.

For search specifically, OpenAI says ChatGPT may use relevant memory when it rewrites a prompt into a web-search query if Memory is enabled. The defensible conclusion is that disabling Memory stops that memory-based contribution to future query rewriting while the setting remains off.

That does not make the action a complete erasure:

OpenAI also says a log of deleted legacy Saved Memories may be retained for up to 30 days for safety and debugging. That retention statement should not be confused with continued use for ordinary search personalization.

Google Gemini: Memory, Activity, Connected Apps, And Other Google Settings Are Separate

Google's Gemini memory documentation says users can turn off Memory to stop Gemini from using past chats to personalize the experience.

Google separately tells users to delete all chats containing a detail from Gemini Apps Activity if they want Gemini to stop remembering that information. If a connected app contains the same detail, Google says the user must both delete the relevant chats and disconnect the app:

Google also warns in the Gemini Apps Privacy Hub that changing Gemini settings does not change other Google settings such as Web & App Activity or Location History. Other Google services may keep their own data, and deleting Gemini Apps activity does not delete data saved in those services.

Gemini's Keep Activity control has another data lifecycle. Google says activity is auto-deleted after 18 months by default, with options for 3 months, 36 months, or no automatic deletion. If Keep Activity is off, future chats do not appear in Activity, but Google says they are still retained with the account for 72 hours for response, feedback, and protection purposes.

Those numbers describe storage and product operation. They do not prove that a turned-off memory continues to personalize searches.

Microsoft 365 Copilot: Saved Memory And Chat-History Inferences Have Different Controls

Microsoft's Copilot Memory documentation says turning off Saved memories does not automatically delete already saved memories. Users must delete them individually or select Delete all memories.

Microsoft documents a different result for chat-history personalization. Turning that control off deletes inferences Copilot made from previous chats, with removal from the Copilot system after 30 days. If the control is turned back on during that 30-day grace period, Microsoft says the deletion is overridden.

A Seven-Source Search-Personalization Audit

Use this audit when you want a detail removed from future AI-assisted searches.

1. Memory Controls

The goal of this step is to stop future use. Do not treat it as proof of deletion.

2. Stored Memory

Open the memory summary or saved-memory manager. Delete the specific detail or clear the memory store if that matches your goal.

Ask the assistant what it remembers, but do not rely on the answer alone. OpenAI says its visible memory summary may not include every detail in the broader memory synthesis.

3. Source Chats And Archived Chats

Find conversations where the information was first shared or later repeated. Delete those chats if you no longer need them.

For ChatGPT, OpenAI says deleting a saved memory without deleting the source chat is not full removal. For Gemini, Google says deleting all chats containing the detail is the way to remove something Gemini remembered from past chats.

4. Files And Projects

Check uploaded files, reusable libraries, projects, notebooks, or knowledge stores. A deleted chat may not delete a file stored in another container.

If the detail remains in a file the assistant can access, it can re-enter context even after memory cleanup.

5. Connected Apps

Disconnect email, calendar, drive, photo, or other apps that should no longer supply the information. Then remove the source data from the connected service if deletion there is part of your goal.

Disconnecting an app does not necessarily erase information already copied into a chat. Deleting a chat does not necessarily erase the original email, calendar event, document, or photo.

  2. Delete the memory or memory summary detail through the product's settings.
  3. Delete source and archived chats that contain the information.
